Skin Abscess Pilonidal Abscess - Symptoms, Causes and Treatment of Skin Abscess Pilonidal Abscess

Many people have as a birth defect a tiny opening in the skin just above the anus. Fecal bacteria can enter this opening, causing an infection and subsequent abscess.

A Pilonidal (Abscess, Cyst, Sinus, Dimple) is an abscess in the natal cleft (more commonly referred to as your butt crack) that tends to become infected and cause intense pain and drainage. Sometimes a Pilonidal contains hair and sometimes they don't.

An abscess usually starts as a plugged skin gland, cyst, or a folliculitis infection that progresses. Puncture wounds or other injuries to the skin, often thought to be trivial at the time of injury, can form painful abscesses several days later. In the upper portion of the buttock crease, there may be a persistent congenital cyst. Pilonidal cyst is a kind of abscess that occurs in the crease of the buttocks. They often begin as tiny areas of infection in the base of the area of skin from which hair grows (the hair follicle). Pilonidal cysts often form after long trips that involve prolonged sitting.

Treatment of Skin Abscess Pilonidal Abscess

Since skin is very resistant to the spread of infection, it acts as a barrier, often keeping the toxic chemicals of an abscess from escaping the body on their own. Thus, the pus must be drained from the abscess by a physician. The surgeon determines when the abscess is ready for drainage and opens a path to the outside, allowing the pus to escape. Treatment may include:

  • Antibiotics to treat the infection
  • Surgery to drain the abscess or remove the cyst

The primary treatment for most boils is heat application, usually with hot soaks or hot packs. Heat application increases the circulation to the area and allows the body to better fight off the infection by bringing antibodies and white blood cells to the site of infection.

Home remedies and prevention tips for the treatment of Skin Abscess Pilonidal Abscess

If the buttock area has an inflamed hair follicle, Pilonidal cysts can be prevented by avoiding continued direct pressure or irritation. Additionally soap and hot water cleaning and drying can be helpful to relieve the irritated area.

By adhering to basic cleanliness guidelines one greatly reduces their risk of getting boils. When a cut occurs clean it immediately don't wait. If something gets under your skin get it out immediately don't wait. Use antibiotic creams and keep the area clean.

Health Tip

When ulcer starts to form in the stomach or duodenum a burning pain will be felt just below the breast bone. Treatment of a peptic ulcer aims to heal the ulcer and to prevent it from recurring. Giving up smoking and cutting down on alcohol should ease symptoms.
